Your personal statement is the single most important part of any application to a program or institution. YJ Heo explain how to create or improve your narrative.

You can either A) submit a past personal statement for a different program that YJ can use to help you think through what your new, updated personal statement should be or B) submit a draft of your personal statement to one of your ‘reach’ national fellowships (this can be easily adapted for others if you are applying to multiple). Note: It is much more advantageous for you to share a very rough draft of your statement earlier over a more polished draft later. Sharing your resume or other documentation can help YJ contextualize your narrative. It’s perfectly fine if you do not share your resume, for example, but you should consider doing this.

What YJ will do is assess the personal statement as if he's judging you for any given national fellowship. YJ will tell you A) what elements of your writing are weak B) what is best about your narrative C) what you might be missing structurally and D) how you can improve your story with a very high degree of specificity.

YJ will send you a ~10 minute voice memo as he reviews your submitted documents (this is variable based on the contents you share, but YJ expects it to be between 10-30 minutes). YJ's current, estimated time for sharing the voice memo is within 48 hours.

This operates through DocReview.app, which streamlines the processes for document review. If you have any questions feel free to ‘reply to’ the email sent from DocReview.app, and that will be sent directly to YJ Heo.
