Sometimes applicants or candidates will fail to communicate effectively for important opportunities.
This is your first impression when you speak with or write to a professor, recruiter, program administrator, scholarship coordinator, or potential employer. While the documents you share with others may be the primary source material that you hope they review, these documents are one part of a whole submission process (which includes written communication). Failing to communicate effectively–when you are attempting to sell yourself as 'the right choice'–can result in an outright rejection. In many cases, YJ Heo has learned that students who have shared good/near-perfect/exceptional resume can get rejected from their desired opportunities because they are unable to correctly or appropriately deliver written communication. However many of you might not know that this is why you're getting rejected (if you were already aware, you would have already corrected it before communicating anything).
Before you submit your important materials, YJ can review what you plan to email or write to the given parties. Give me as much information and background about the opportunity, and put a first draft of your communication in an editable google document, etc. YJ will send you back a very thorough voice memo as he reviews your draft, so that you can understand how a third-party reviewer may interpret your communication.
While YJ's immediate goal is to help you improve your chances, YJ also has a larger, and perhaps more important goal of teaching you how to self-assess your communication style so that you can self-correct in future communications. This is what he would consider to be most valuable for you over the long-term.
